Sometimes our lives can feel like a circus. It’s a pretty apt metaphor for what it feels like to navigate our daily lives and all the emotions that come to the surface. Le Cheval de Cirque is a painting by Marc Chagall, one of the great artists of the twentieth century, and one of my personal favorite painters. This painting, part of a series he created on the theme of the circus, is one of my favorites. It is typical of his colorful, joyous, and playful images, which celebrate life with a sense of childlike wonder. And it causes me to think about the challenges of living a happy, healthy life.

Like the circus, our lives are busy, bustling, and more than a little chaotic at times. Every day it seems like there is so much happening that it’s hard to take it all in, along with a good dose of craziness, and all the constant challenges laying claim to our attention.

We are the high-wire artist, desperately trying to maintain our precarious balance.
